From 1964 until 2018, 66 (recorded) people have been killed in this meadow, over 40 women have been widowed, and tens of children handicapped. How?

Tosa Maidan, from 1964 t0 2014 was one of the firing ranges of Indian armed forces (Army, CRPF, BSF and air force). Which means these forces used to station their artillery (which according to the locals included bofors as well) in the villages on the foothills of Tosa Maidan, and from there they fired towards Tosa Maidan targetting various glaciers, mountain peaks and forest. In the process, the villages that came in between this route faced the brunt.

Moreover, Tosa Maidan is a pasture or grazing land of the Gujjar Bakherwal and Kashmiri Shephard community. During the summer months, when families from all the villages shift to the meadows, the male population used to succumb to firing while they took their animals for grazing. A meagre sound of this heavy artillery used to cause the houses to crack.
All of this just for the sake of practising and training.

Other than this, animals and people used to fall prey to the unexploded shells that landed in Tosa Maidan. The forces never bothered to even clear the meadow off these shells.
Human life, human health, livestock, environment, everything has been affected by this. Finally, the locals decided to gather and start a movement for the liberation of Tosa Maidan in 2008.

Tosa Maidan in total crosses over 40 square kilometres of area and reaches around 13000 ft. However, people never stopped going there, they never will. It is where they are born, grow up and get their livelihood from.
